Workplace mental health issues ‘swept under carpet’

Mental health issues are being “swept under the carpet” in the workplace, with sufferers afraid to discuss any problems with their employer, according to a new study.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that one in four had experienced a mental health problem, sometimes caused by their work.

Only one in four of those questioned by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said their employer encouraged staff to talk about mental health problems.

Workers in the public and voluntary sectors were more likely to suffer than those in private firms, the research found.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, said: “This research shows that there is still a long way to go until workers feel able to discuss their mental health openly in work, enabling them to get the support they need.”
