YCCC legend Ray Illingworth recovering from heart attack

YORKSHIRE and England cricketing legend Ray Illingworth has suffered a heart attack.

Illingworth, 78, is recovering in the Coronary Care Unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

Last night his family said he was recovering well.

His son-in-law, Ashley Metcalfe, a former Yorkshire opening batsman, told the Yorkshire Post: “He had a heart attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“He’s in Leeds General Infirmary at the moment but, hopefully, he should be out within the next 24 to 48 hours.”

Illingworth underwent an angioplasty operation, involving medics widening a narrowed or blocked blood vessel.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club last night sent its best wishes to Illingworth, the current club president.

“We would like to wish Ray all the best at this difficult time,” said Robin Smith, a YCCC board member. “I’ve spoken to his wife and he is recovering well.

“He’s got some very good medical staff around him and a very strong family.

“Our best wishes and the best wishes of all cricket lovers are with him right now.”

Illingworth, who captained England to victory in the 1970-71 Ashes, still plays an active role in Yorkshire cricket.

He is in his second year as YCCC president and regularly attends the county’s games.

“Ray has always been and remains a wonderful ambassador for Yorkshire County Cricket Club,” added Mr Smith.

“He’s done a tremendous amount of good work during his time as president and we’re looking forward to seeing him back at Headingley as soon as possible.

“We were all very saddened to hear the news of his condition and our thoughts are with him and his family.

“He is one of the legends of the game – one of the greats – and the whole of cricket will wish him well.”
