Under-fire councillor faces critics

A COUNCILLOR faced a barrage of criticism as he attended his first meeting since a controversial email containing “offensive” comments about the Hillsborough report was made public.

Coun Roger Taylor, a Conservative councillor for Calderdale, has faced calls to quit over the email he sent to JUST West Yorkshire, which described the Hillsborough report as “overloaded with politically correct language”.

In the email, which was sent to the human rights group on September 16, Coun Taylor also brands the Stephen Lawrence inquiry “a joke” and made “deeply offensive Islamophobic comments”, the charity claims.

Coun Nadir Fekri, a Labour councillor for Calderdale, has reported Coun Taylor to their standards board and challenged him at Thursday’s full council meeting.

Coun Fekri said: “He didn’t say anything but he looked glum.

“It is now up to the Conservatives to distance themselves from these comments. We’ve made it clear we are very cross with him.”

Coun Taylor says the email was sent from a personal account and was not intended for the public.
