Under starter’s orders for trophy auction

a HISTORIC 200-year-old horse racing trophy is to be auctioned for the first time tomorrow in Scarborough.

William Duggleby, above, of Duggleby Auctioneers, said the Welham Cup is a George IV parcel gilt racing trophy and cover. It includes a presentation inscription ‘won by Mr Hills black horse Blackwood at the Malton Craven meeting April 30th 1835’ and is embellished in relief with fine quality fruiting vines by Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard London, 1823. The trophy stands 38cm tall and weighs approximately 84oz with an oak case.

Mr Duggleby said: ‘The horse racing trophy has never been up for auction before and will hopefully attract interest from the local horse racing industry when it goes on sale on Saturday.’
