‘Unique’ silver medals are commissioned for road race

ATHLETES usually have to finish in the top three to be presented with a medal.

But for the first time, unique sterling silver medals are to be presented to non-elite finishers in the Great Yorkshire Run, which takes place in Sheffield on Sunday, October 9.

The medals, worth £250 each, have been developed by Sheffield Assay Office and will be awarded to the 5th, 50th, 500th and 5,000th placed finishers, to mark the fifth anniversary of the 10k run.

The Great Yorkshire Run has grown to become one of the most successful mass participation events in the Sheffield area, with more than 8,000 people set to take part this year.

Ashley Carson, from Sheffield Assay Office, said: “There won’t be many medals like these in the world, outside of the Olympics, so they will be very special collector’s items.”

Race organiser and former Olympic middle distance runner John Mayock said: “We are grateful to the Sheffield Assay Office for helping to provide these medals.

“For all four of the runners who are lucky enough to receive a medal it will be a day they will never forget.”

Last-minute places are still available for this Sunday’s race, with adult entry costing £25.
