Unit named after market veteran

An education unit at the wholesale market in Bradford has been renamed to pay tribute to a market trader.

Donald Grimshaw dedicated 60 years of his life to improving conditions at the market.

Bradford Council has now renamed the education unit the Donald Grimshaw Training Suite in memory of the market trader who was still working at the age of 88 when he died on September 27.

Mr Grimshaw had spent over 50 years as secretary of the Tenants' Association in which he represented the traders' interests, all in a voluntary capacity.

Markets manager Colin Wolstenholme said: "He was a larger-than-life character who was a good negotiator with a wide range of knowledge and a photographic memory. He never seemed to lose any of his faculties even though he was in his eighties. He enjoyed getting to grips with computer technology and used it to keep in touch with the business when most people would have lost interest. We really admired him and it seemed apt to name the education unit after him."

The recently refurbished unit is used for visitors, demonstrations and meetings for the public.
