University looking at election history

A PUBLIC lecture on the history of electioneering and how people engage with politics is to be held at Sheffield University tonight.

Us and Them: A History of Electioneering in Modern Britain will provide an insight into how elections have changed from the 18th century to the modern day.

The discussion, which will be led by Dr Jon Lawrence, an expert in political history from Cambridge University, will mark the launch of the Centre for Democratic Culture at Sheffield University.

Co-director of the new centre Dr Dan Scroop, from the university's department of history, said: "Dr Lawrence's lecture will place the present electoral contest in broad historical context, helping us understand how our relationship to politics and our ideas about democracy have changed over the last 200 years."

The lecture, which is free, will begin at 5.30pm in the Richard Roberts building, off Brook Hill roundabout.
