University wins international award for its green campus

STAFF at the University of Bradford are celebrating after becoming the first in Europe to receive an international award for sustainability.

Joining last year's winner, the Australia National University, Bradford has been awarded the 2010 International Sustainable Campus Award in the Impact category.

The award recognises schemes that demonstrate how campus development and management have impacted on research, teaching and the wider campus community.

This award is the latest in a string of high profile awards and accolades, including being named as the seventh greenest university in the UK, according to the People & Planet League 2010.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Cleary said: "The university has been granted this prestigious award in recognition of its work and commitment to sustainable development.

"The Ecoversity programme at the university aims to embed sustainable development across the whole institution and has lead to real changes in terms of improvements to buildings, the physical look and feel of the campus, together with strengthened links with the local community.

"It's five years since Ecoversity was launched at the House of Lords and the initiative is really gaining momentum.

"It's because of the continued efforts and the dedication of all staff, students and visitors that the judges honoured Bradford with this award."

The ISCN was established by the world's leading research universities – Yale, Harvard, and Cambridge – to promote sustainable campus strategies and action worldwide.

It was formed five years ago and has been working recently with the Global Universities Leaders Forum (GULF) to promote leadership on Sustainable Higher Education. This is now the second year of the ISCN award.

This international award adds to the reward and recognition that the University has received nationally through the Green Gown Awards 2010.
