Upgrade allows for more day surgery

MORE patients can have day surgery at Doncaster Royal Infirmary after new facilities opened as part of a £1.8m upgrade.

Up to 28 people can now have surgery a day at the 14-bed unit, which is three times as big as the old eight-bed unit it replaced.

Consultant ENT Surgeon and Clinical Director for Theatres Jay Dugar said: “The completion of these new facilities means that more patients can now have their day case procedures at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

“We can also perform much more complex operations on a day-case basis that previously would have required an overnight stay in hospital.”

The unit consists of two single-sex bays with room for six patients each and two single rooms and a comfortable lounge where people can wait to be discharged.

It opens from 7.30am to 8.00pm, Monday to Friday. Its opening is the final part of a programme which has also seen improvements to the children’s surgical and theatre assessment units.
