Upper Dales artist’s work goes on show at park offices

SKETCHES and prints of some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Yorkshire Dales have been brought to life with a new exhibition.

A display of work from Upper Dales artist Janet Swailes has gone on show at the Yoredale offices of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA), in Bainbridge.

Ms Swailes, who is also the YDNPA’s landscape conservation officer and is finishing a PhD in field sketching at Edinburgh College of Art, said: “I am interested in the structures and patterns of natural and cultural landscapes.

“The exhibition has sketches and prints of the barns and walls scenery, mostly from Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, and also some studies of rock exposures of the upper reaches of the Rivers Ure and Eden – my home landscape.

“Working outside, the emotional qualities of places such as isolated farms, historic fields, ruins, and hidden river landscapes, are fascinating.”

The exhibition is being staged in the reception area of the offices, which are open from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday throughout March and April.

Richard Burnett, the YDNPA’s head of finance and resources, said: “This is the latest in our popular series of exhibitions by local artists and I’m sure Janet’s beautiful sketches will be of interest to visitors and staff alike.”
