Valuable items taken from cars overnight

POLICe are warning motorists to keep their valuables well hidden after a spate of thefts from cars in north Derbyshire.

Since the start of October, there have been more than 30 such thefts from vehicles parked in areas including Chesterfield, Dronfield and Bolsover.

Recent incidents include tools being stolen from a Toyota Hilux which was parked on Burnbridge Road, Old Whittington, Chesterfield, overnight between Sunday and Monday.

On the same night, money and a satellite navigation system were stolen from a Ford Fiesta which was parked on Wharf Road in Pinxton.

Tools were stolen from a Citroen Relay van parked on Ashford Close in Dronfield Woodhouse, overnight between Saturday and Sunday and a musical instrument was stolen from a Citroen Dispatch parked on Laurel Avenue, Ripley, sometime overnight between Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, an ipad was taken from a Vauxhall Corsa which was parked on Chesnut Drive in Shirebrook, overnight between Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Community safety inspector at Derbyshire Constabulary, Russ Dakin, yesterday urged motorists to take precautions.

“It is really important that motorists check that they’ve locked their cars and removed any valuable items such as sat navs, mobile phones and laptops on display,” he said.

“This can really help reduce the risk of their vehicle being broken into.

“We would also ask that anyone who may have seen anything suspicious, or with information about these incidents or any crime in the area, to contact us.”

Police have also advised drivers to try and park in busy, well-lit areas, use a secure garage where possible and fit car alarms.
