A VAN caught fire and exploded in a bungled raid on a business premises in Leeds.

It is believed the explosion was caused accidentally during an attempted break-in at the property on Nursery Lane, Alwoodley.

It is thought a tool such as a blow torch, used to try to get into the premises, caught fire and the fire spread to the white transit van, which is believed to have been stolen.

Up to five men were seen close to the van but had fled before police arrived following the explosion just after 6pm on Friday. A man was later seen acting suspiciously in the area.

Det Insp Richard Holmes, of North East Leeds CID, said: “This is an isolated incident during which some individuals were attempting to gain entry into a nearby premises when the equipment they were using caught fire. It is fortunate that no-one has been hurt and we are now appealing for help from the public to trace those responsible.”
