Vandalised garages cleaned up in communities project

vandalised garages which were making life a misery for locals have been cleared up as part of a scheme which aims to bring neighbours together to tackle community issues.

Sheffield Council said the garages, on St Wifrid’s Road in Sharrow, were in dire need of attention before the launch of its Good Neighbours, Great Communities campaign.

As part of the scheme, a team of three project workers toured the streets around Broomhill, Sharrow and Ecclesall Road on the hunt for the worst blackspots.

When they came across the garages, the team contacted the owners who agreed to clean them up.

Mark Holmes of Fowler Sandford, which manages the site, said: “The site had a lot of problems with graffiti and overgrown vegetation, and we were more than happy to do our part.

“I think the work has made a real difference, and will hopefully inspire more local landlords and residents to take a pride in their community.”

Coun Andrew Sangar, who is in charge of the scheme at Sheffield Council, said: “A lot of people have already seen the difference we have made in local areas by sorting out problems street by street.

“Nobody likes to live near an eyesore and we want people to feel safe and happy in their local environment. I would like to thank the owners for their hard work.”

The project has launched in the Ecclesall Road, Sharrow and Broomhill areas, and if successful, will be introduced across the city. To report a “grot spot” which needs attention, call 0114 203 7410.
