Vandals damage glasses on Larkin's new statue

Mindless vandals have damaged the famous glasses on a statue within weeks of it being unveiled in Hull as a tribute to legendary poet Philip Larkin.

Now the organisation behind the statue is working to get it repaired.

The sculpture was unveiled at the station in Hull during December, on the 25th anniversary of his death.

But the piece suffered damage to its spectacles between Christmas and New Year. It is unclear exactly when the damage was inflicted.

Larkin spent much of his life in Hull and is buried in the city. The erection of the statue was the culmination of a year of cultural events in the city to mark the anniversary of his death.

Professor Graham Chesters, chairman of Larkin 25 – an organisation which arranged for the tribute – said: "I am disappointed, but it is only a minor piece of damage and I am confident it will be repaired quickly."

Another high-profile event saw a series of fibreglass "Larkin" toad sculptures placed around the city, but one of those was stolen shortly after being put in place. Some were auctioned at the end of the event late last year.
