Veteran ex-Para, 79, teams up for gruelling charity trek

Walking such a long distance in nine days with a heavy back pack would be more than enough exercise for most people.

But it’s just not tough enough for 79-year-old ex-paratrooper Jeffrey Long, of Bingley. and retired Bradford printer Eric Ogden, who is 66.

In their determined bid to raise at least £5,000 for the Royal British Legion, which celebrates 90 years’ service this year, they will take a “break” during their 90-mile walk next month to climb the Three Peaks of Yorkshire, Penyghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

Joining them for the challenge, which will see them climb 5,000ft, will be Gary Peacock, general manager of Bradford’s Midland Hotel, who admitted: “I’m going to have to make time for some serious training.”

The trio are preparing to walk the Three Peaks on on July 13 and 14.

Mr Peacock added: “When you think what some of our servicemen and women have endured and are achieving I’m sure I can manage to climb the Three Peaks.”

Former soldier Mr Long is no stranger to long distance walks. Several years ago he walked from London to Lausanne, Switzerland, to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
