Veterans urged to check before D-Day visits

Second World War veterans in Yorkshire who are hoping to attend commemorations to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings this summer are being urged to check whether they can access sites to ensure their emotional pilgrimage is not ruined.

The Royal British Legion has urged veterans to contact its officials to ensure they can gain entry to the sites they wish to visit as security restrictions will be in place in Normandy, and accreditation is required for many of the events during the anniversary period.

The Royal British Legion and the Ministry of Defence will provide the accreditation required for sites in Normandy, and veterans are being asked to get in contact as far as possible in advance.

The Royal British Legion’s national chairman, John Crisford, said: “It’s understandable given the high profile nature of these events that some security restrictions will be in place and it’s the Legion’s role along with the MoD to make it as straightforward as possible for veterans to attend.”
