Vets slam Europe over labels
A LEADING veterinary organisation has led criticism of the decision to scrap compulsory labelling of meat slaughtered without stunning.
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) expressed its "significant disappointment" that the EU Council was making the move.
It follows a vote which took place in June in the European Parliament over new rules including new country of origin labelling and a requirement to label meat from animals slaughtered without stunning. However the latter clause was dropped this week.
BVA president Harvey Locke said: "This is a huge step backwards. The BVA believes that all animals should be stunned before slaughter."
