Victorian library gets makeover

AN HISTORIC Hull library will be closed from today for five months of major refurbishment work.

Western Library, in Boulevard, which dates back to 1895, was the first library in the city to be built from public funds and the city council said the work will transform the facilities available.

Improvements will include a new extension housing a lift and stairwell, giving people access to the first floor for the first time in over 30 years.

Both floors will have a major overhaul to bring the internal space and décor up to modern standards at the same time as retaining its original Victorian features.

The adjacent garden is being brought into the library complex for community use.

Alternative facilities are being provided in Boulevard village hall while the work is carried out.

Coun Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: “Western Library is a much loved community facility which has been long overdue a facelift. Bringing the first floor back into use means we can offer people a much wider range of services and provide meeting rooms for local organisations. It will take a few months to complete.”
