Victorian reservoir to be restored

A RESERVOIR which dates from 1868 is to undergo a five-month programme of restoration as part of a £60m scheme being carried out across the region by Yorkshire Water.

Ingbirchworth reservoir, near Barnsley, has become popular with walkers after the company invested in a network of footpaths around it, but engineers will now move in to strengthen the banks.

The project, which will cost £500,000, is expected to take five months, and the level of water in the reservoir has been reduced to allow work to take place.

Yorkshire Water spokesman John Bond said: “Ingbirchworth is popular with visitors both for its stunning vistas and its diverse wildlife.

“We’re committed to doing everything we possibly can to ensure that, while work is ongoing at the site, visitors continue to enjoy a pleasurable and undisturbed experience.

“The work we are doing at Ingbirchworth and at other reservoir sites across the region – many of which are more than a century old – will enable us to continue to safeguard the high quality water supply to the region for many years to come.”
