Victory in battle over golf course footpath

A RETIRED senior council official has won a battle over a public right of way against his former employer.

Former Wakefield Council head of administration Peter Bancroft, 62, was determined to establish the public footpath over the council-owned Lupset golf course, Wakefield.

After a year gathering evidence, Mr Bancroft this week received a letter from the council saying they were "now of the opinion that the footpath should be added to the definitive map".

His case was proven with the help of more than 90 people who gave him evidence which prove the footpath had been a right of way as far back as the 1930s.

The council's planning and highways committee had decided in August there was not enough evidence that a footpath existed.

Mr Bancroft has received a letter from the council which apologises for the way his application had been dealt with, saying it could have been done in a "more open and transparent manner".

After his victory, Mr Bancroft said: "If you think that you have a good case, stick to it."
