The 30-minute cruises on board the Mary Ann Hepworth are popular with tourists, but owner Barry Sneddon, who filmed the encounter, said he had never seen so many dolphins on a trip.

He said: “There were around 100 of them. It was unreal, the best day I have had on my boat in 30 years.”

In the days following the sighting, the dolphins were spotted further along the coast from Staithes to Robin Hood’s Bay, patrolling the coast in search of fish.
