THE Prince of Wales officially became an old age pensioner today - turning 65 as his birthday celebrations threatened to light up the heir to the throne.

Charles, who is touring the Indian sub-continent with Camilla, spent the day with the sound of wellwishers singing Happy Birthday ringing in his ears.

His collection of presents grew larger and larger and the number of cakes he received reached five.

Meanwhile in York, a 21-gun Royal Salute in York marked the occasion.

Military music filled the streets as the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band marched from Duncombe Place, near York Minster to the Museum Gardens.

The salute will be delivered on the stroke on noon by three 105 mm Light Guns fired by officers and soldiers of the Catterick-based 5th Regiment Royal Artillery in front of the gathered crowds.
