Mark Rolls, 25, popped the question to 22-year-old Natasha Robinson at the White Rose Shopping entre in south Leeds following months of planning with his friends.

Mr Rolls, from Halifax, planned the festive gesture with the White Rose centre management team and with a little help from Father Christmas, who has been residing in his grotto throughout December.

His stunned girlfriend of three years thought that she and her boyfriend were visiting the centre to buy Christmas presents for one another.

After queuing up to meet Santa Claus, Natasha was surprised when it came to her turn that he already knew her name. After five minutes of teasing her, he finally told Natasha that her boyfriend had a very special question to ask her, to which her answer was yes.

Ms Robinson, from Sowerby Bridge, said: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed.

“I had no idea at all that this is what Mark had planned for our shopping trip.

“I can’t believe he went to so much effort to plan this all, and that our friends were in on the secret all this time.

“I’m so happy and really looking forward to spending our first Christmas together as an engaged couple.”

Mr Rolls, who has lived with his wife-to-be for more than a year, said: “I always said that if I was ever going to propose I would do it in a big way.

“Especially as Christmas is just around the corner, it seemed like the perfect fit to get Santa involved.”

Mr Rolls went to a lot of effort when choosing the ring and managing to keep it a secret. Whilst Natasha was sleeping, he drew around a current ring that she wears on to an old Lottery ticket and asked a jewellery store’s staff to find a ring of similar size.
