Video: Great Yorkshire Show car parks full - visitors advised not to set off

VISITORS to the Great Yorkshire Show are being urged to stay at home today if they haven’t already set off.

The announcement came at 9.30 this morning as car parks not closed by the recent flooding rapidly filled up.

Organisers have made arrangements for a new park-and-ride scheme, 1.5 miles from the showground at Plompton Bar, from which a continuous loop of free buses will transport visitors to and from the showground.

There will also be an increase in free shuttle buses from Harrogate Station, a new internal road to assist car park access, stones put in place in front of gateways and tracks laid to the car parks which are open.

But this morning organisers urged visitors not already en route not to set off. They also advised anyone not already holding a ticket or members’ pass not to attend later in the week.

A final inspection of the showground saw the show given the go ahead, although visitors would be wise to bring waterproof walking boots or Wellington boots.

Chief executive Nigel Pulling said: “The showground is in reasonable condition; we have about seven miles of roads and plenty of permanent buildings, and the ground itself is holding up well.

“We are delighted that the show will go ahead, especially after the deluge of the last few days, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole team here.

“We have a great programme of events over the next three days and we look forward to welcoming visitors.”

Organisers have been laying miscanthus, a green energy crop usually burned in power stations, on muddy spots around the site to make the ground passable.

Tuesday will see 185 soldiers parade around the Main Ring wearing combat dress, with Colours flying and bayonets fixed, as well as a period of silence to mark the Regiment’s recent losses

Record rainfall has seen numerous events cancelled with last weekend’s Mfest at Harewood House among them.
