Video: Handbag raiders throw three-month-old baby to the ground

POLICE have issued CCTV of the moment a three-month-old baby in a pram was thrown to the ground as “desperate” robbers stole his grandmother’s handbag.

The attack happened at around 12 noon on Saturday October 15 when two women were walking back from shopping in Bolton town centre in Greater Manchester.

The mother of the baby boy, 33, was carrying a number of shopping bags, while the baby’s grandmother, 56, was pushing the pram. Both had their handbags slung over her shoulders.

After walking through Bobby Heywood’s Park, the two women were walking down a footpath when two men ran up behind them.

The 56-year-old woman felt a blow to her head and screamed as she fell to the ground, causing the pram to topple over onto its side.

The baby was strapped into the pram and was not injured during the fall, police said.

The two men managed to grab one of the handbags and flee.

The young woman ran after them but collapsed almost immediately through exhaustion from the struggle.

Police said the grandmother was not seriously injured.

Detective Inspector Stuart Wilkinson, from Bolton’s Robbery Unit, said: “These were the actions of two desperate individuals who had no regard whatsoever for the wellbeing of these two women or the young baby they were with.

“As you can see from the CCTV, it is lucky that the baby was strapped into the pram and wasn’t injured during this robbery.”
