Video: Harry Ramsden’s original restaurant is a chip off the old block

THEY used to come from all over to sample Harry Ramsden’s fish and chips. The original flagship restaurant at Guiseley, near Leeds, was closed down last year until its rescue by the Wetherby Whaler group which today officially re-opened the venue which has been restored to its former glories.

Guests of honour included Harry Ramsden’s daughter and granddaughter who travelled from Ireland. His granddaughter, Jayne Dinan, said: “Grandad would be absolutely thrilled if he saw it now.”

His daughter, Shirley Dillon, walking into the newly-refurbished restaurant, said: “Its beautiful, I am so thrilled.

“Look at the windows – they are just like dad’s”

Among the guests were sisters Mavis Broadbent and Wendy Sanford who walked from their home in nearby Horsforth to be first in line when the restaurant marked its 21st anniversary by selling fish and chips at the original price.

The branch of Harry Ramsden’s was originally run from a wooden shed before moving into its famous Art Nouveau-style building in 1931.

The Guiseley restaurant closed in November before it was taken on by the Wetherby Whaler group.

It has undergone a £500,000 refurbishment designed to bring the restaurant up to date, with the famous chandeliers updated with new fittings.
