Video: How Yorkshire Post readers saved a Dutch masterpiece

A DUTCH masterpiece at risk of being taken out of Yorkshire has been saved for the nation after a major fundraising effort championed by the Yorkshire Post.

Pieter Brueghel the Younger's stunning 1602 painting The Procession to Calvary will now remain at Nostell Priory, near Wakefield, to be enjoyed by thousands, rather than be lost to public viewing in a private collection.

Campaigners yesterday revealed that a total of 2.72m had been donated to the cause, the final 1m coming from a National Heritage Memorial Fund grant.

Dr Stephen Deuchar, director of arts charity the Art Fund, which organised the appeal with the National Trust, said: "The public support to keep this wonderful painting at one of Yorkshire's most magnificent stately homes has been fantastic throughout the campaign.

"The Yorkshire Post has really helped to play a part in capturing the public's imagination within the region for Nostell Priory's star attraction and has no doubt contributed to galvanising support for the campaign locally."

The National Trust will use the money to buy the painting from the Winn family, who said they wanted to sell it last September.

The painting is on display at York Art Gallery until Sunday. It will return to Nostell Priory and be open to public viewings from the end of February.
