Video: M-way memorial to ‘unsung heroes’ at IRA bombing site

A WOODLAND is to be planted and a memorial unveiled in recognition of the work of Army medics.

The Army Medical Services memorial will be opened on Sunday at Hartshead Moor services, near Bradford, which is already home to a tribute to nine soldiers and three civilians who died in an IRA coach bombing in 1974.

The latest memorial was designed and commissioned by the charity, Life for a Life Memorial Forests.

Charity chief executive Norman Armstrong-Kersh said a piece of land was granted by the service area operator for a memorial woodland. Five trees will be planted on Sunday.

The memorial is dedicated to the four Royal Corps of the Army Medical Services.

Mr Armstrong-Kersh described members of these corps as “unsung heroes” who deserved greater recognition, and added: “I wanted something that would give formal recognition of this while also giving the opportunity to raise charitable funds for both the civilian and military communities across the UK.”

Captain Eddy Hardaker from the Reserve 207 (Manchester) Field Hospital said the wooded area would allow people to pause for thought. Life for a Life trees can be purchased for £495, with funds going to local causes.

A new memorial to the IRA bombing victims was unveiled at Hartshead Moor in 2009.
