His mother Fatou Ann Danso, who was with her daughter Danlo Keita-Ann, said he had been "cruelly taken" and it has been a very difficult year for the family.

In the appeal, spoken through an interpreter, she said her four-year-old granddaughter could still not understand where he had gone and wanted to know why the "doctors hadn't made him better yet."

She said: "Beyake was a kind and gentle boy and we are desperate to find out why he was attacked and who did it.

"If you believe you have information about who was responsible I urge you to contact West Yorkshire Police."

More than 20 men have been arrested and questioned as part of the investigation into his murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Scott, who is leading the investigation, said: "We firmly believe the answers they are looking for lie within the local community and we would urge anyone with information to come forward and speak with our officers or anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers.

"Beyake suffered horrific injuries and it is vital that we find out who did this, so they can be brought to justice and that his family can have some comfort in knowing those responsible are locked up.

"There is also a possibility that circumstances may have changed in the last 12 months and that those who felt they were not in a position to speak previously can do so now.

"If this applies to you then I would again urge for you to come forward and speak with our officers or Crimestoppers so we can get justice for Beyake and his family."
