Video: Pancake races at Leeds Minster

DOZENS of youngsters enjoyed a pancake race down historic backstreets in central Leeds ahead of Shrove Tuesday.

Pancake Day is now a firm favourite on the Leeds map as children from St Peter’s Church of England Primary School, at Cromwell Street, LS9, take part in the celebration.

Although Shrove Tuesday is now a commercialised event, it was historically held so people could use up their supplies from the pantry before fasting for lent began.

Liz Holliday, head at St Peter’s, said the 75 pupils who took part had really enjoyed it: “It has become a traditional event in our school calendar now and held at special pancake assembly to mark it.

“They race on the same route behind the church, and as many of our pupils are choristers at the minster, they wear traditional dress. There were many winners, as they raced in groups of four or five.
