Video: Rhubarb takes centre stage in Yorkshire food festival

FOODIES will be in Wakefield next month to celebrate all things rhubarb.

Wakefield Council will once again host the annual Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb, which includes a specialist food market, guided walks and a number of fringe events including a mini music festival.

The festival celebrates the traditional links with rhubarb growing in Wakefield, while offering the finest and tastiest regional produce and showcasing the work of local chefs.

It will be held on Friday and Saturday, February 25-26 and has attracted sponsorship from the regional tourist board Welcome to Yorkshire.

The council's cabinet member for tourism, Coun Glen Burton, said: "The Wakefield Festival of Food Drink and Rhubarb is now in its fifth year and we are delighted that Welcome to Yorkshire is supporting the festival for the first time to help attract even more visitors to the area. Many of our local businesses and attractions already take part and we hope that with Welcome to Yorkshire's support we can expand the festival for the enjoyment of local people and visitors."

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said last night: "This is not only one of the first major events on the food calendar, but it is also one of the most unusual.

"Yorkshire is the home of rhubarb and I'm sure people will be coming from near and far to enjoy this wonderful event which we are delighted to be supporting."
