Video: Stamp of class as collection goes to charity

The collection of more than 1,000 stamps dating mainly from the 1930s and 1940s, is being auctioned next month to raise money for Martin House children’s hospice in Wetherby.

It has been put up for sale by the granddaughter of the late collector, Frederick MacLoughlin, and could fetch £3,000 to £4,000.

The vendor, who wishes to remain anonymous, said stamp collecting was one of her grandfather’s many hobbies along with wood carving and making wireless sets.

He worked as an office manager for Rea’s Tugs in Liverpool and workmates and friends would give him stamps for his albums, which cover the Commonwealth countries in alphabetical order, and occasions including the Olympic Games and the Silver Wedding of George V1 and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother in 1948.

She said: “I hope they make a good lot of money for this charity.”

The sale is at Beverley Racecourse on February 9.

Hawleys Auctioneers confirmed it is waiving its commission for the sale.
