The singer also suggested the pair form a new group called the Wondercats when he took part in The Late Late Show’s popular segment where host James is joined by famous faces on his drive to work and sings some of their hits on the way.

James usually gets his guests to do the driving, and the blind musician was happy to play along with the joke that he would take the wheel, but he had “misplaced his licence”.

He then FaceTimed a friend to verify that Corden was the real deal, joking: “All English guys look alike.”

The duo sang along to Stevie’s hits including Superstition, Sir Duke and Isn’t She Lovely.

At one point James asked Stevie to speak to his wife Julia on his mobile because she wouldn’t believe they were in the car together.

The singer obliged, saying hello to her in a British accent before launching into an impromptu version of his hit I Just Called to Say I Love You, but changing the words to “I just called to say James loves you”, which made the Brit well up.

He wiped his eyes, saying: “Oh my god, you have just won me so many brownie points with my wife.”

The pair then discussed forming a group called the Wondercats, who would perform Stevie Wonder hits with new lyrics.

“We are going to headline every place in the world,” Stevie told James.
