Video: Why it’s raining brollies in York

GIVEN the weather of the past few months, it could not be a more apt choice. A new art installation has been put in place at one of York’s best-loved landmarks featuring a string of 45 umbrellas suspended in the air by wires.

The temporary installation, dubbed Umbrella Sky, has been put up at Clifford’s Tower in
a light-hearted nod to the torrential downpours throughout the summer and into the autumn.

It is the first time the medieval tower has had any kind of covering since an explosion blew off the roof in 1684.

But despite the poor recent weather, there were bright blue skies on a crisp autumnal day when the installation was unveiled yesterday. It has been created by staff at the English Heritage site and is due to remain in place until Sunday, October 21 – weather permitting.
