Video: Why Leeds Met students are Britain’s booziest

LEEDS Met University is officially the booziest in the country, a new survey has found.

Students there claimed to drink an average of 26.7 units per week during term time, according to the studentbeans.com Student Drinking Survey 2011.

Sheffield Hallam University finished just outside the top ten in 11th place, the University of Sheffield was 13th and the University of York 21st. In all three cases, students regularly drank over 20 units a week.

Leeds Met Student Union criticised the survey, saying it “irresponsibly glamorizes binge drinking” and emphasising that it was “committed to promoting sensible drinking.”

The National Union of Students said drinking should not be a competition.

Vice-President (Welfare) Pete Mercer said: “Presenting the consumption of alcohol as a competition is incredibly irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

“There is a myth that university students are more likely to indulge in risky drinking behaviour but they are actually more likely to take precautions and think about their safety when drinking than the broader population.”
