Video: Yorkshire projects in running for Lotto cash

COMMUNITY projects across the region are fighting it out for funding in the final stages of the National Lottery Awards 2011.

Battling it out in the finals of the Best Heritage Project category are two Yorkshire schemes – Unfolding The Quilts, based at the Quilt Museum and Gallery in York, and Wentworth Castle Gardens, near Barnsley.

The Lottery-funded projects are up against competition from another project in Northern Ireland.

All the finalists in each of the seven categories will be invited to a glitzy awards event in November, where the overall winners will be revealed.

In addition to the Lottery funding they have already been awarded, the winners will each receive a £2,000 cash prize to spend on their project.

At Wentworth Castle Gardens, a total of £17m has so far been spent on restoring a number of historic buildings and monuments including the Corinthian Temple, the Sun Monument, the Gun Room and, most recently, the Rotunda. More than 30,000 people have visited the Quilt Museum and Gallery since it opened three years ago, enabling them to learn more about the art of patchwork and quilting.

Public voting for the finals of the National Lottery Awards starts at 9am today and ends on Monday, September 26.
