Video: Yorkshire’s historic homes ready for tourist influx

Many of the old houses, such as New Hall and Gardens near Ripon, have just reopened after winter and are hoping for a good start to the new season.

Staff at Newby Hall have been repainting seats and fences in the gardens and replanting the borders.

On Sunday, April 5, Newby Hall is hosting an Easter family fun day when actors dressed up as fairies, trolls and pixies will be delighting children.

There will be Easter eggs for children and a face painter.

Attractions run by English Heritage and the National Trust are also expecting a busy Easter weekend.

From Friday to Monday an Easter adventure quest is taking place at Whitby Abbey and at Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, both of which are suitable for families.

At Castle Howard, one of the country’s finest country houses, there is a traditional fairground, farm and children’s activities from Saturday through to Monday.

Children will be able to meet animals at the mini farm, from alpacas to guinea pigs, and take part in an Easter egg trail.

For those who like their entertainment fast and furious, the Royal Armouries in Leeds could be the place to be.

On Friday through to Monday there is medieval jousting as knights battle for the coveted Sword of Honour.

On Easter Monday there will be a melee at noon when all the competing knights will clash with clubs in an every-man-for-himself battle.

It will be followed by a parade and grand final. Entrance fees apply for most attractions.
