Village cheer as pig unit plans rejected
Proposals for a massive pig-rearing unit close to a village in the Yorkshire Wolds have been rejected.
More than 100 villagers in Burton Fleming, near Driffield, about a quarter of the village's population, wrote to council planners objecting to the project.
Yesterday East Riding Council's planning committee refused the application by Yorkwold Pigpro Ltd which wanted to build two finishing units housing 4,000 pigs just over half a mile from the centre of Burton Fleming and on the scenic route to Grindale. The pigs were to be kept on slatted concrete in units just five yards short of the length of an international football field with the slurry being spread locally.
John Coleman, one of a number of villagers who travelled to the meeting in Beverley, said: "The people of Burton Fleming are very thankful the scheme has been rejected."
