Village hopes history will help to bring life to modern community

VILLAGERS in Paull are hoping to breathe new life into their community with the launch of a heritage trail and guide book.

The trail, which will be launched on Sunday with a service given by the new parish vicar, the Rev Kathy Lawrie, celebrates the life of the village.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book as three communities – Pageal, Low Paull and Upper Paull – the village has a rich and varied history. The trail begins and ends in St Andrew's Church, a 655-year-old building that recently underwent a 237,000 restoration project.

Its chancery bears the scars of two direct hits from cannonballs fired at Paull Battery by Cromwell's troops in 1643.

It is one of 10 points along the trail that have been marked with artwork designed by children at the village primary school.

The accompanying guide book, written by Paul Cross, features photographs recording significant events in the village's past, such as King George V's Coronation Day celebrations on June 23, 1911.

Mr Cross said: "Paull is a typical rural community that has lost its shop and Post Office and we have tried to do things to keep it in people's minds.

"We want to bring people to the village, teach them about its history and hopefully boost trade in the pubs and the other businesses we've got."
