Village prepares for 900th birthday

A NORTH Yorkshire village dating from the reign of William the Conqueror is celebrating its 900th anniversary next month.

Villagers at Hutton Buscel, on the edge of the North York Moors, near Scarborough, have arranged a host of events to celebrate the landmark date.

The three-day event, features a special service from the Bishop of Whitby, Martin Warner, and re-dedication of the newly refurbished bells at St Matthew’s Church, alongside concerts, family activities and a centenary market taking place.

Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society will also be hosting a special exhibition at the event, with a number of talks about the early history of Hutton Buscel and West Ayton planned.

Organiser Neil Gardner said: “Everybody is very excited about the event, a lot of effort has gone into the planning since the start of this year and we hope it will be a really successful occasion.

“We have a very good line up over the three days and the Bishop of Whitby’s service will be very special.”

Scholars believe that the land the village now occupies was transferred to Reginald Buscel in the year 1111.
