Village scenes pictured to raise funds for church

A Holderness village looks pretty as a picture in paintings going on display in a new gallery opening on Saturday.

The show at the Bean Gallery at Wentworth House includes around 50 works by local artists, including guesthouse owner Ann Teale, the 2009 winner of the Beverley Open Art Exhibition and 87-year-old Muriel Berzins, who has lived in the village for 40 years.

Some well-known village scenes are captured in acrylic and oil, including Dairy Farm opposite the Post Office, reputedly the oldest building in the village, the church, and the George and Dragon pub.

Prices start at £25.

Mrs Teale, a member of the newly-formed Friends of St Bartholomew’s group, said: “There is a surprising number of people locally who paint. We see this as an opportunity for local artists to show their work without having to travel to Beverley, Hornsea or Hull.

“The group has been set up to help pay for things like insurance which costs the church nearly £2,500 a year and repairs and maintenance.

“We are thinking of doing more themed-open exhibitions in future – for example beaches, people or gardens – to encourage people to paint.”

The exhibition will be open from 10am to 5pm and refreshments will be available.
