Village set to lose fight on planned turbine

RESIDENTS of an upmarket village look set to lose their fight to prevent a wind turbine being built on a nearby hill.

More than 70 people have objected to plans for a 34m-tall turbine on land at Mount Pleasant Farm, Barkisland, which is close to Saddleworth Road, Scammonden Water and the M62.

Applicant Edward Fairbank has told Kirklees Council that the turbine will generate income which will help establish a farming business.

Mr Fairbank has indicated that he plans to develop a new beef herd, rear sheep and introduce arable crops. The proposed turbine would make the farm more competitive by lowering energy costs, it is claimed.

A council report on the proposals says 73 letter writers are objecting to the plans, with seven in support.

They have argued that the structure would spoil views, be overbearing on nearby listed properties, noisy and affect the openness of the green belt.

Seven people have backed the plans, saying the area is already dominated by masts and other structures.

Kirklees planning officers are backing the proposals, arguing that the area already exhibits other vertical structures, including masts at Pole Moor.

Their planning report concludes: “Whilst the development constitutes inappropriate development in the Green Belt it is considered that any impact on the openness of the Green Belt would be modest and the wider environmental benefits associated with the increased production of energy from renewable sources would outweigh any harm caused.”

Councillors will discuss the plans at a meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall tomorrow.
