Villagers attack agency over 'patch-up' repairs to noisy road surface

VILLAGERS living near the busy A63 are up in arms after discovering that the Highways Agency is going to patch up rather than resurface a stretch of noisy carriageway which is making their lives a misery.

Four years ago 500 residents of Elloughton and Brantingham signed a petition calling for the resurfacing of the stretch between South Cave and Welton. They say the increased volume of traffic is affecting their quality of life, making it almost impossible to sit outside in their own gardens.

However the Agency has now written to residents saying work will begin on November 15 – but a low noise surface will only be laid "where patching takes place".

Robert Savage who has lived on Brantingham Road, Elloughton for 33 years said: "We are all hopping mad because we expected the road to be resurfaced in full, especially along the back of the houses. The patching is not really a satisfactory answer. From a noise point of view patching doesn't solve the problem. It might even be more annoying than a constant drone."

A Highways Agency spokeswoman said some areas may be resurfaced the full width of the carriageway and in stretches up to 200 yards in length.

She said: "The works being undertaken on the A63 are being carried out to ensure that the carriageway surface is in a safe and serviceable condition. Work will take place to resurface large sections of the road between South Cave and Welton. There will be further resurfacing works at this location next year subject to funding."

The affected road surface was last resurfaced 25 years ago – only 13 years after it opened in 1972.
