Villagers oppose site for travellers

FRESH protests against contentious plans for a travellers’ site in one of 60 possible locations across Selby are planned tomorrow night after villagers claimed the council was imposing an unnecessary burden on the community.

Selby District Council’s proposals to select a site, where as many as 20 caravans would be pitched, have provoked a furious reaction among residents with hundreds of written objections submitted and collected on a petition.

At a meeting organised by Brayton Parish Council last week, so many people attended they had to hold it twice just to cram everybody in.

Now, ahead of another meeting tomorrow organised in Burn which has housed a travellers’ site for several decades and is earmarked for three potential new camps, Chris Phillipson, vice chairman of Burn Parish Council, has urged residents to make their voices heard so they are not drowned out by other larger areas.

“It would be unfair for us to have another site here”, he said. “The burden needs to be spread out across the district.”

Tomorrow’s meeting takes place at 7pm in Burn Methodist Chapel and the public consultation over the plans ends on March 21.
