Villagers step up fire cover battle

PARISH councillors are stepping up their campaign to save a village fire station from closure.

Haworth Parish Council members want the county’s fire service to drop controversial proposals to shut the station which will save the authority £310,000 a year.

Parish councillors are so worried about future fire and accident cover that they are working on tentative plans to take ownership of the building and provide cover themselves.

It would mean a rise in council tax as the parish council’s budget is only £33,000 a year.

Yesterday parish council chairman John Huxley and clerk Lisa Balderstone met the fire authority’s Steve Beckley, the deputy chief fire officer.

Mr Huxley said the parish council was trying to determine the level of support in the village for the council’s suggestion of taking over the building.

A parish council meeting is being held on Monday November 26.

“We are talking about the possibility of having a public meeting,” he added.

“We have to be sure that, if we are taking something this big on, that it is going to be supported by the village.”
