Violence mars FA Cup derby

TWELVE people were arrested as disorder marred the FA Cup Lincolnshire derby between Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United.

Six were arrested before and during the match on Saturday, including two for pitch invasion and others for public order offences and breaching banning orders.

A further six were arrested when large groups of fans clashed outside Blundell Park after the match, which ended 0-0.

Supt Dave Hall, of Humberside Police, said: “Following the match, as police made attempts to direct Scunthorpe United fans safely away from Blundell Park, an altercation took place between a large number of individuals.

“These people are believed to have been both Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United supporters. One person sustained injuries in the incident and left the location before receiving any treatment.”

Mr Hall said the game, which attracted a crowd of 8,306, had passed off relatively peacefully.

“The arrests of the 12 people indicates that overall it is a very small minority of people who caused a small amount of disorder on the day of the football match.

“This was a game of great significance for both sets of supporters and I am pleased to see that it was not spoilt for the majority of people. Officers who worked alongside Grimsby Town Football Club made sure that the majority of people had a safe and enjoyable day.
