Virtual open days help students to explore university

STUDENTS from around the world will now be able to explore Sheffield University’s courses and campus through an online virtual open day.

The tour covers everything prospective students might want to know about the university’s department of physics and astronomy, including the chance to tour buildings using panoramic internal Google Street View images.

Working alongside traditional open days held throughout the year, the interactive open day
offers a new way to explore the
department featuring live web chats with academics and the students about their own experiences.

Browsers are able to “walk” the corridors of the department’s Hicks Building to see computing and work spaces, with images that boast enough detail to read the title of a book on a shelf.

Pro-vice-chancellor for learning and teaching, Professor Paul White, said: “The pioneering virtual open days are another great example of the University of Sheffield creating new ways for people to interact with us and find out more about the world-leading facilities, courses and teaching we offer.

“Virtual open days will allow more people than ever before to experience the university, as well as allowing them to revisit the campus as often as they like.

“They offer even more opportunities to learn about this excellent establishment in addition to our already fantastic open day experiences.”
