Beningbrough Hall and Gardens, a National Trust property, near York, is giving visitors a chance to discover more about the portraits on display as part of a partnership with the National Portrait Gallery.

John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, is one of the many famous faces visitors can see adorning the walls of the hall as part of the national collection of 18th century portraits and there is the opportunity to discover how and why he is famous for inventing the popular snack.

The 70th anniversary of the Dambuster raids is the subject of this year’s annual Visiting Portraits display exploring the growing reputation of pilots as heroes of the sky during the Second World War.

Beningbrough Hall and Gardens was recently received a Visit York award as visitor attraction of the year.

Events and marketing co-ordinator Jo Parker said “We have such a great offer all year round, the entire team of dedicated staff and volunteers are delighted to have won this prestigious award.”

At present, the gardens are bursting to life and a lawn of cherry trees and fruit trees is providing a daily changing palette of colours.
