Vital flood protection to go-ahead for homes in village

Barnsley Council successfully bid for the funding which will be used on 48 houses in Bolton-on-Dearne inundated by the high floodwaters of June 2007.

The work includes properties in Mexborough Road, Lowfield Road Meadowgates and Riverside Gardens.

Flood consultation surveys will shortly be carried out to assess what measures will need to be
put in place at the various properties.

The project will begin early next year and take several weeks to finish. Equipment includes air-brick covers and removable door barriers put in place at times of flood risk to provide a watertight seal on external doors.

One-way valves for waste pipes will also be fitted to prevent flood water flowing up the property’s waste water and sewage pipes.

As part of the scheme, a consultation event for eligible residents in the area is planned for Wednesday next week. Council staff will be on hand to provide further details about the project along with other flooding related information and advice.

Residents affected by flooding from other areas of Barnsley can also get advice from the flood
victims’ charity the National Flood Forum which will open its exhibition trailer at various locations across the borough from Wednesday to Friday next
week.
