Volleyball boost at the 'Resort for Sport'

ONE of the country's biggest beach volleyball tournaments will take place in Bridlington this weekend in the latest attempt to establish the town as "the resort for sport".

More than 400 competitors from across the country are expected to compete in the Bridlington Open Beach Volleyball Championships, being held over Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament, which follows the staging of national windsurfing championships last week, will take place at South Shore Beach in front of the new Park and Ride car park, and is being sponsored and supported by East Yorkshire Events.

Paul Roggeman, conference and events manager at East Yorkshire Events, said the championships were part of a wider effort to give Bridlington a reputation as a centre for sport.

He said it would also boost the town's tourism industry.

He said: "The Bridlington Open Beach Volleyball Championships fit perfectly with our plans to re-establish Bridlington as 'The Resort for Sport', with the volleyball following on just a week after the town hosted the UKWA National Windsurfing Championships.

"The influx of approximately 500 people into the resort for a long weekend provides a boost for local tourism and also adds great value for residents and visitors alike, offering the perfect opportunity to watch live sport for free whilst enjoying a day out at the seaside."

This year's tournament will see the addition of junior competitions for younger age groups, from under-14s to under-17s.
